Improving Sleep Quality and Relationships

RESTFUL SLEEP FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE

Quality sleep is essential for your physical and mental health, energy levels, and relationships. When sleep is disrupted by snoring, bruxism (teeth grinding), or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, it also impacts your days, your mood, your well-being, and even your closest relationships.

At the Center for Sleep Therapy, we help patients reclaim peaceful, restorative sleep, reducing their risk for long-term health issues while helping them feel refreshed and energized. Treating sleep-disordered breathing and nighttime teeth grinding also improves relationships, allowing couples to sleep in the same room again and wake up feeling their best.

What is Bruxism?

AND ITS CONNECTION TO AIRWAY HEALTH

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is often considered a sleep-related disorder as it commonly happens when a person is sleeping. Mostly, it is an unconscious habit. Many people won’t realize they grind their teeth unless their partner tells them. Or they may be informed by their dentist because they have detected enamel wear or fractures at a regular dental checkup. Forcefully clenching and grinding teeth together can lead to significant dental damage.

Many people don’t realize that bruxism is often connected to breathing issues. When the airway is partially blocked, the body compensates by tensing the jaw and shifting the bite to keep the airway open. This cycle of clenching and grinding disrupts sleep quality and increases health risks over time.

How Does Grinding Your Teeth Affect Your Health?

THE HIDDEN CONSEQUENCES OF BRUXISM

While you may not notice grinding while you sleep, the effects accumulate over time, increasing your risk of enamel damage. Constant grinding can lead to tooth sensitivity and strain on the supporting gum tissue. The excessive pressure can also weaken teeth, causing them to chip, crack, or break entirely. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, overworks the jaw muscles, leading to morning headaches, facial soreness, and chronic tension in the neck and shoulders. The repeated muscle tension and micro-awakenings prevent deep, restorative sleep, leaving patients exhausted and irritable during the day.

Without treatment, bruxism continues to wear down teeth, impact jaw health, and disrupt sleep quality. But there are solutions to protect your smile and improve your sleep if you decide to seek treatment.

What Treatment is Available For Bruxism?

How Do I Stop Snoring?

A CUSTOM SOLUTION FOR BETTER BREATHING

Snoring is a common sign of airway obstruction, and in many cases, it disrupts both the snorer and their sleep partner. At the Center for Sleep Therapy, we treat snoring several different ways. One is through custom-made oral appliances that reposition the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open. Dr. Anissi will also make lifestyle recommendations to reduce airway inflammation and improve nasal breathing. We also follow up with you long term to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of your treatment.

Snoring can indicate underlying breathing issues that affect heart health, cognitive function, and daytime energy levels. Seeking treatment early can help you to prevent further complications and restore your sleep.

TMJ Disorder, Chronic Headaches, Jaw Pain, and Migraines

FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE OF TMJ ISSUES

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is often a symptom of an underlying problem, rather than the issue itself. Many cases of TMJ pain, headaches, and jaw discomfort stem from either a misaligned bite, bruxism, or a tongue tie.

At the Center for Sleep Therapy, we don’t just manage the systems; we consider the whole patient. Possible treatments for TMJ-related issues include frenectomy, TMJ appliance therapy, and occlusal adjustment.

A restricted tongue can affect bite alignment and airway health. A tongue tie evaluation may confirm the need for frenectomy, a simple treatment to release the tissue and help correct these issues. TMJ appliance therapy is where we create a custom appliance to reduce jaw strain and correct the bite position. Another way to tackle a misaligned bite is through an evaluation and occlusal adjustment.

By identifying and addressing the root cause, we help patients eliminate chronic pain, restore function, and achieve better sleep.
